Atlético de Madrid - Manchester United: two Mancunians ruled out, one Madrid player absent
The European clash between Atlético de Madrid and Manchester United will be marked by several important absences on both sides.
Atlético de Madrid and Manchester United will face each other at the Metropolitano on Tuesday evening in the second matchday of the Champions League league phase. It is an important fixture for both teams, but it will be played without several key players.
For the Madrid side, Koke will not take part in the match following the death of his mother. Deeply affected by the bereavement, the Atlético captain will naturally be absent. The rojiblanco club announced that a minute of silence will be observed before kick-off in tribute to his mother.
Mainoo and Shaw absent for Manchester United
Manchester United will also have to make do without two important players. Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw did not travel to Madrid due to physical issues. Michael Carrick confirmed this before the match: “They didn’t travel due to physical issues.”
These two absences reduce the English coach’s options as the Red Devils go through a difficult period. United are without a win in their last four matches in all competitions and will have to respond in challenging circumstances against a Madrid side much higher in confidence.
An already delicate situation for the Red Devils
Atlético have won their last four La Liga matches and will also be able to count on the support of the Metropolitano crowd. Diego Simeone had, moreover, called for caution before the match, saying that Manchester United remained a “very strong” team despite their recent results. The Argentine coach had thus issued a strong warning ahead of this clash.
