Borussia Dortmund: Niko Kovac extends contract until 2029
Borussia Dortmund officially announced on Tuesday that Niko Kovac’s contract has been extended until June 30, 2029. The 54-year-old Croatian coach will continue his work at the helm of the German club, as will his two assistants, Robert Kovac and Filip Tapalovic.
Arriving in spring 2025 with BVB in 11th place in the Bundesliga, Niko Kovac quickly turned the situation around. Under his direction, Dortmund secured qualification for the Champions League on the final matchday of the 2024-2025 season.
The following season, the Croatian coach led his team to second place in the league with 73 points. It was the fifth-highest points tally in the club’s history.
A statistical record that influenced the decision
In 53 Bundesliga matches on the Borussia Dortmund bench, Kovac has collected 114 points, an average of 2.15 points per match. According to the club, no other BVB coach has recorded a higher average in this competition.
Sporting director Lars Ricken praised the team’s progress since the coach’s arrival and emphasized the importance of stability in the sporting project. The official also stressed the confidence Kovac enjoys within the club.
Chairman of the management board Carsten Cramer, for his part, highlighted the coach’s attachment to Borussia Dortmund, as well as the good relationship between the technical staff and the sporting management.
Kovac wants to continue the progress
The Croatian coach intends to build on the foundations laid since taking charge in order to continue developing the team. In particular, he stressed the need to keep improving and not be satisfied with the results already achieved.
With this extension through 2029, Dortmund is banking on continuity in its technical staff to consolidate its place among Germany’s best teams and pursue its ambitions in the Bundesliga and Champions League.
