James Milner writes his own legend. The Brighton midfielder has become the most capped player in Premier League history with 655 appearances, surpassing icons such as Gareth Barry and Ryan Giggs.

James Milner now holds a record that crowns over two decades of exemplary conduct, consistency, and professionalism at the highest level. Having entered the professional game at a very young age, Milner has spanned eras without ever losing his competitive edge. A product of Leeds United F.C., he emerged as one of the most promising young talents of his generation before continuing his ascent at Newcastle United and then Aston Villa F.C.

However, it was at Manchester City where he truly reached a new level, before experiencing the peak of his career at Liverpool. With the Reds, he played over 300 matches in all competitions, becoming a locker room leader and a key figure in the club’s domestic and European triumphs.

Arriving at Brighton in 2023, many thought they were witnessing the final chapters of his career. But the Englishman had another surprise in store.

A new lease on life at 40

Hampered last season with only four appearances, Milner seemed to be drifting into a secondary role. Yet this campaign tells a completely different story: already 17 matches played, including several consecutive starts—a testament to regained trust and outstanding physical condition.

The 40-year-old Englishman has just reached the symbolic milestone of 900 club appearances, scoring 86 goals over a 24-year career. On the international stage, he also made his mark, bringing his total number of professional matches to 961, including 61 with the Three Lions.

At the summit of a historic ranking

By becoming the most capped player in Premier League history, Milner has firmly secured his place in the pantheon of English football. Ahead of him, no one. Behind him, names that defined their eras, such as Gareth Barry and Ryan Giggs.
