Dennis Onyango set for crunch talks over Mamelodi Sundowns future
Exclusive
Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Dennis Onyango is set to hold crunch talks with the club's hierarchy over his future at Chloorkop, Foot Africa has learnt.
The 41-year-old shot-stopper is currently out of contract as his one-year extension that was triggered ahead of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup lapsed at the end of June 2026.
He last featured in February against TS Galaxy in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16, where Sundowns were eliminated after a 2-0 defeat at KwaMhlanga Stadium.
Onyango made a total of four appearances across all competitions last season, serving as a reliable deputy to number one goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Now, with the 2026/27 campaign slowly approaching, sources have informed this publication that Onyango is poised to discuss the way forward with the club.
The veteran goalie is understood to have been earmarked for a technical role as the goalkeeper coach of the Uganda national team under head coach Paul Put.
Sundowns, however, are said to be exploring the possibility of tabling another one-year deal with the view of offering Onyango a similar role at Chloorkop upon his retirement.
Notably, he is ahead of Reyaad Pieterse and Jody February in the pecking order, while Ricardo Goss is set to return to the club after his loan spell at Siwelele FC last season.
The Uganda international joined the Brazilians from Mpumalanga Black Aces in 2011 and has made a total of 285 appearances with 138 clean sheets in all competitions.
Onyango has won 17 trophies, including nine league titles and two CAF Champions League crowns since signing for Sundowns, securing his status as a club legend.
With the African champions set to compete on all fronts next season, it remains to be seen whether the experienced Onyango will be retained beyond the 2025/26 term.
