Fiorentina: Grosso Sacked After Three Matchdays

Fabio Grosso has paid the price for a disastrous start to the season. The Italian manager was officially sacked by Fiorentina this Sunday, September 6, after just three matchdays in Serie A.

Fiorentina decided to part ways with Fabio Grosso following a completely disappointing start to the league campaign. The Tuscan club officially announced his departure in a statement published on Sunday: “ACF Fiorentina announces that Fabio Grosso has been relieved, as of today, of his duties as head coach of the men’s first team.”

The Italian manager therefore leaves the Fiorentina bench after just three league games. Fiorentina lost all three matches, leaving them with zero points, nine goals conceded and just one goal scored.

Three Defeats That Sealed His Fate

The latest defeat against Torino (2-1) on Sunday finally convinced the club’s hierarchy to move on. After three matchdays, Fiorentina find themselves in a very worrying position and are yet to get their season off the ground.

Grosso’s record is unequivocal: three games, three defeats. Such a poor start quickly weakened his position and accelerated his departure, despite the league campaign only just getting underway.

An Extremely Early Coaching Change

A Coaching Career Marked by Setbacks

This latest premature departure inevitably raises further questions about Fabio Grosso’s managerial career. A former World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, the Italian has never truly managed to establish himself consistently at the highest level as a coach.

After beginning his managerial career with Juventus’ youth teams, Grosso went on to coach Bari, Hellas Verona, Brescia and Frosinone in Italy. He also had an experience abroad with French club Olympique Lyonnais.

His spell in Lyon remains particularly significant. Appointed in September 2023, Grosso managed Lyon for only a few months before being dismissed in November of the same year following a series of disappointing results. At the time, Lyon were struggling badly in the league and found themselves in a very worrying position in the standings.

His time at Lyon had already highlighted the difficulties the former defender faced when dealing with the pressure of a major club and the need to deliver results quickly.
