Former Al Ahly & Ismaily coach Juan Carlos Garrido has issued a strong warning to Spain ahead of their international friendly against Egypt on Tuesday 31 March as both sides prepare for FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers.

Speaking to Marca, the Spanish coach highlighted Egypt’s competitive mentality and the significance of the match for the Pharaohs.

Egypt vs Spain: More than just a friendly

Egypt are set to face Spain in a high-profile international friendly during the March break but Garrido insists the match will be treated with full intensity by the African side.

“For Egypt, there are no friendly matches.. They will give everything because of what their national team represents. This game against Spain is very important for them .. it’s a chance to show their quality and prove themselves” Garrido explained.

The Spaniard who previously coached both Al Ahly & Ismaily stressed that Egypt’s players approach games against European opposition with a highly competitive mindset, regardless of the official status of the fixture.

Passion that defines Egyptian football

Reflecting on his time in Cairo, Garrido spoke passionately about the unique football culture in Egypt. He described the atmosphere as unmatched recalling his experience winning CAF Confederation Cup with Al Ahly.

“The passion there goes beyond football .. it’s something you feel deeply.. I played in a packed stadium during a continental final and the atmosphere was incredible. Egypt and football are inseparable” he said.

He also emphasized how the national team unites the entire country noting that while clubs like Al Ahly hold great importance, the national side carries a special emotional weight.

Tactical insight & key players

Garrido also offered a tactical breakdown of the current Egyptian team under head coach Hossam Hassan. He expects Egypt to line up in 4-2-3-1 system focusing on possession and attacking football.

“They are not aggressive team but very technical. They want to play good football” he said.

With Mohamed Salah unavailable for the match, Garrido pointed to Omar Marmoush as a key attacking figure alongside Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” whom he coached at Al Ahly.

“Trezeguet is fast and talented and there are several other quality players. This is a team that wants to compete and play attractive football” he added.

Salah’s legacy & lasting connections

Garrido reserved special praise for Liverpool star Mohamed Salah describing him as Egypt’s most influential football figure on the global stage.

“He has broken all barriers and is the best ambassador for Egypt in football. He’s incredibly popular and respected.. I met him in 2014 .. he’s humble, kind and very well-liked in the dressing room” Garrido said.

The coach also revealed he remains in contact with several Egyptian players including Trezeguet, Mohamed Hany and Rami Rabia highlighting the strong relationships he built during his time in the country.
