Former Zambia national team head coach Wedson Nyirenda has tipped Ghampani Lungu for an influential role in Orlando Pirates' quest for the elusive CAF Champions League title.
The 28-year-old attacker joined the Buccaneers from Siwelele FC at the beginning of the season, hitting the ground running with four goals and a solitary assist in nine appearances across all competitions.
Lungu, as a result, has somewhat become a fan favourite amongst a section of the Bucs faithful, having also scored a hatrick against Mamelodi Sundowns last season, which reduced their goal difference in the title race with Pirates.
His compatriot, Nyirenda, is not surprised by the immediate impact at Pirates, citing versatility as one of the player's strongest attributes, in addition to the winning mentality and professional conduct.
“Ghampani Lungu is a modern and next generation player, he can play as many positions as possible. Ghampani can play right-back, left-back, holding midfield, right winger, and as a striker,” the CAF Pro License holder told Foot Africa.
"So, I am not surprised that he has made instant impact at the Buccaneers. His discipline is at the highest level. He also has a heart of a winner.
The well-travelled mentor, who pipped Pirates to the Telkom Knockout Cup with Baroka FC in 2018, believes Lungu can prove instrumental for Abdeslam Ouaddou's side in the Champions League and in the Betway Premiership.
“Pirates have really scouted well on Ghampani, he is a continental player. He will play a huge role in advancing the team in the run for the CAF Champions League and retaining the league championship,” Nyirenda added.
Nyirenda, meanwhile, is currently at the helm of Malawian giants FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, and was recently named FDH Bank Premiership Coach of the Month for August - his second monthly accolade of the season.
