LaLiga: Javier Tebas accuses Real Madrid

In recent hours, the president of LaLiga has strongly reacted to two articles published by a Spanish media outlet criticising the Spanish league’s treatment of Real Madrid.

Javier Tebas does not hesitate to take aim at anyone, including the leading clubs in his own league, LaLiga. At present, Tebas is at war with Real Madrid. Relations between the LaLiga chief and Florentino Pérez have always been frosty.

For several months, Los Blancos, through their Real Madrid TV channel, have systematically criticised referees and LaLiga. This editorial stance forced LaLiga to revise its method of appointing referees for each matchday: they are now appointed 24 hours before matches, rather than several days in advance, in order to limit the media pressure orchestrated by the club. However, Real Madrid have still not changed their strategy and constantly portray themselves as victims, even going so far as to suggest that they are the target of a widespread conspiracy.

Vinicius Jr fans the flames of the war

The tense atmosphere deteriorated further with the Vinicius Jr affair. The Brazilian was sent off after pulling Nathan Saliba’s hair and suspended for four matches. This time, it was the publication of two articles by El Debate that prompted Tebas to break his silence.

“Tomás González Martín and Jesús Urdiola (the two journalists who wrote the articles, editor’s note), it is becoming more difficult every day to distinguish your articles from a statement issued by the Real Madrid board. Tomás, you above all have become their official mouthpiece, to the point of using expressions identical to those I have heard from a senior official in Valdebebas. There are many references to ‘club sources’, but very little distance from what those sources want to get across. You resemble a small parrot, but with a keyboard. And so that the protagonists are not mistaken: this senior official whose words you reproduce is NOT the one who calls media newsrooms to demand the dismissal of journalists and applies pressure so that company executives are removed. They are different people. And those calls and pressures are not a thing of the past. They are very real. Very much present. The Real Madrid board conducts an orchestra of spokespersons and Real Madrid TV leads the dance. Its score is always the same: select the actions that interest it, repeat the grievance, fuel suspicion and point to the enemies,” he wrote on his X account.

Tebas compares Real Madrid to Nazi propaganda

The president of LaLiga followed this up with a comparison that is likely to generate considerable debate in Spain.

“This method is reminiscent of the propaganda mechanisms used by Goebbels, Nazi Germany’s Minister of Propaganda: systematic repetition, the construction of an enemy and the subordination of facts to a narrative. The comparison concerns these propaganda techniques, not an ideology and, of course, not Madrid supporters. Real Madrid TV is a central element of this machinery. Where is the complete analysis of the matches from each matchday? Where are the possible errors that harm other clubs or those that favour Real Madrid? If they applied the same critical scrutiny to all matches, the result might perhaps disrupt their script. But the script requires Real Madrid always to appear as a victim. This leads to the extreme of presenting even the ABSENCE OF AN ERROR as an error and using the Negreira case as a permanent explanation for any decision they do not like. Suspicion is treated as proven and the conclusion is written before the match has even begun. And this same technique is now being applied to schedules: only what fuels the sense of grievance is highlighted, while the context that would make it possible to verify the facts is concealed. So let us talk about schedules, Tomás. Let the senior official who feeds the mouthpieces explain how many requests for changes to match times and dates Real Madrid has submitted and how many have been accepted (on this issue, they are top of the table). The accepted ones too! Let him not limit himself to mentioning only those that serve his purpose in fuelling the latest controversy. And let him include the requests linked to the calendar aimed at facilitating the organisation of events that the ‘super licence’ allows to be held at the Santiago Bernabéu. Because when it comes to asking for the competition to be adapted to their needs, they show plenty of initiative; when it comes to acknowledging the requests that have been granted, they have far less memory. This is the balance sheet that should be published: what Real Madrid requested, what was granted and what could not be accommodated, together with the reasons. Schedules also affect the opponent, other clubs, supporters and the competition’s audiovisual commitments. A request does not become a right simply because it comes from Real Madrid, just as a refusal does not prove persecution. LaLiga is defending its competition. What is not serious is to request adjustments to dates, times and the calendar and then present every disagreement as proof that LaLiga is harming the club. If people want to discuss the treatment received, they must tell the story of ALL the treatment received. Tomás, here are specific questions for your sources. And Real Madrid TV has material for a programme: the club’s requests and the responses it has received. We will see whether they devote the same enthusiasm to that record as they do to videos denouncing grievances. Afterwards, the other mouthpieces amplify the message. Real Madrid TV provides the images, others provide the headlines, and they all repeat the same accusation,” he wrote.
