Ghana: Otto Addo dismissed 73 days before the World Cup
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) officially announced on Tuesday the end of its collaboration with Otto Addo, head coach of the Black Stars. The decision takes immediate effect, less than three months before the World Cup kicks off.
Otto Addo is no longer Ghana's head coach. The manager has been dismissed following another defeat for the Black Stars, this time against Germany after the earlier debacle against Austria. This split comes at a particularly challenging moment for Ghanaian football. The Black Stars have won only two of their last twelve friendly matches—a statistic the Ghanaian federation deemed unacceptable.
According to several sources close to the squad, the 50-year-old coach had also lost the confidence of the dressing room, a decisive factor in the federation's decision.
A strategic move with the World Cup looming
With just 73 days to go before the World Cup kicks off, the GFA believes it has "given every opportunity" to Otto Addo to turn things around. In the absence of convincing results, the governing body decided it was time for a fresh start and a new direction.
In its official statement, the Ghanaian federation nonetheless thanked the coach for his service and wished him well in his future career. The GFA announced it will soon communicate its new technical direction for the Black Stars.
