Karim Coulibaly set to join Strasbourg for 20 million euros
Karim Coulibaly is on the verge of leaving Werder Bremen to join RC Strasbourg. A full agreement has been reached between the two clubs for the transfer of the 19-year-old central defender, with a guaranteed fee of around 20 million euros, plus up to 5 million euros in bonuses and a 10% sell-on clause. The player now needs to complete his medical before finalizing his move to Alsace. The news was first reported by Fabrizio Romano and has been confirmed in Germany by Bild.
Strasbourg is making a major move for a player considered one of the brightest defensive prospects of his generation in Germany. Born in 2007 in Oldenburg, Coulibaly came up through HSV Barmbek-Uhlenhorst and then Hamburger SV, before joining Werder Bremen in 2024. He quickly rose through the ranks to the first team and signed his first professional contract in 2025.
The young centre-back, who can also play as a defensive midfielder, has stood out for his physical presence, speed, and versatility. He made headlines in the Bundesliga by becoming, at 18, the youngest goalscorer in Werder's top-flight history, during a thrilling 3-3 draw against Bayer Leverkusen.
A strategic investment for the future
This move is about more than just signing a talented young defender. Strasbourg's project is part of the development strategy of BlueCo, the group that owns both Strasbourg and Chelsea. Fabrizio Romano has indicated that Strasbourg is the preferred destination for Coulibaly, with internal discussions suggesting he could eventually become an option for Chelsea.
This explains why the transfer fee is so substantial for a 19-year-old. The fixed amount of 20 million euros, potentially rising above 25 million with bonuses, would make Coulibaly a marquee signing for Strasbourg. Bild even suggests this could become a record transfer for the Alsace-based club.
An established German youth international, Coulibaly has played for the U17, U18, U19, and now U21 national teams. His move to Ligue 1 is set to help him continue his development at a higher level while giving Strasbourg a defender with massive potential for growth and future value.
For Werder, this departure represents a significant financial boost at a time when the club is also managing economic constraints. Strasbourg, meanwhile, is betting on a raw but highly promising player whose potential could quickly reach new heights in France.
