Mokwena Refuses Exit Amid Wydad Turmoil, Eyes Guardiola Showdown
Rhulani Mokwena's made it clear he isn't stepping down from his role as Wydad Casablanca head coach despite growing demands from fans for his dismissal following inconsistent domestic campaign.
According to reports, club president Hicham Ait Menna met with the South African tactician in attempt to agree on mutual contract termination. However Mokwena rejected the idea unless he receives full compensation for the remaining two years of his 3 year deal a condition the club's unwilling to meet.
Club World Cup Ambition: Guardiola the Motivation
Insiders reveal that Mokwena's determined to stay at Wydad until the 2025 FIFA club world cup in the United States where the Moroccan giants are drawn alongside Manchester City, Juventus and Al Ain. His main motivation a chance to face his coaching idol Pep Guardiola.
Mokwena reportedly views the Club World Cup as once in lifetime opportunity and is buying time, hoping to lead Wydad into the global competition before considering any exit from the club.
Post Derby Frustration Boils Over
Following 1 - 1 draw against Raja Casablanca in the highly anticipated Casablanca Derby, Mokwena expressed frustration in the post match press conference:
“We started well but lost focus after the goal. If this result is seen as failure, then maybe my definition of failure is different. I’m here to finish the season”
He also fired back at critics questioning his team selections:
“When I don’t play Bouhra, I’m asked why. When I play him, it’s criticized too. I’m the coach, I make the decisions. I’ve had enough of this debate”
“I left social media to escape constant pressure. With 5 million fans, I can’t listen to everyone. My job's to follow my convictions because, in defeat, I’m the one who must face the media and the players”
