A brutal setback for Giovanni Leoni. Signed this summer by Liverpool for around €31 million from Parma, the 18-year-old centre-back suffered a serious knee injury during his debut against Southampton in the Carabao Cup. Medical tests have confirmed an anterior cruciate ligament rupture. Arne Slot made the diagnosis official in a press conference, revealing a long-term absence of “about a year” and acknowledging how tough this moment is for a player experiencing a new club and a new country. According to the manager, it’s difficult to “find any positives” in such a situation, except perhaps the player’s young age, which means he still has “many years ahead of him” once he recovers.

This injury instantly shakes up Liverpool’s defensive plans. Leoni was brought in to bolster the rotation and offer composure in build-up play, but his absence forces the staff to reshuffle the centre-back hierarchy for the medium term. The club will now implement a strict protocol: surgery, rehabilitation, reconditioning, and then a gradual return to training with the fitness staff, with a competitive comeback only once all recovery milestones are achieved.

On a personal level, the mental challenge will be just as important. At 18, adapting to a new environment, coping with frustration and a lengthy recovery will be decisive. Liverpool has promised full support. Leoni now embarks on a silent marathon, with the 2026 season as his horizon—when he’ll aim to turn this setback into a new beginning.
