French police arrested some of Atalanta supporters in Paris on Tuesday night following violent clashes ahead of the Italian side’s Champions league opener against Paris Saint Germain.

Clashes in the heart of Paris

The incidents took place around rue des Lombards in the 1st arrondissement near Forum des Halles. At 9:15 pm local time .. groups of masked Atalanta fans clashed with local hooligans causing damage and unrest.

Riot police were forced to intervene though no serious injuries were reported.

Details of the arrests

Authorities confirmed that all 19 individual detained were Italian supporters of Atalanta. Some were masked & accused of carrying weapons.

None of the Parisian ultras were arrested, with PSG later clarifying that those involved in the violence have long been banned from entering the Parc des Princes.

Security concerns before kick off

The incident comes just 24 hour before PSG begin their Champions league title defense.

A total of 1184 Atalanta fans had already arrived in Paris with more expected on matchday.

French police have prepared strict security measures to prevent further disturbances at the Parc des Princes.
