Rulani Mokwena's Pyramids FC suffered a 3-2 defeat to Al Ahly Bank at the Air Defense Stadium in Cairo in a CAF Champions League warm-up match.

Al Ahly broke the deadlock in the first half before Algerian centre-forward Nadhir Benbouali leveled matters with a left-footed shot.

The visitors, however, restored their advantage for a 2-1 lead at the interval, and made it a two-goal cushion in the second stanza.

Pyramids pulled one back from the penalty spot as Nasser Maher swiftly slotted home after Ahmed Abdelkader was fouled inside the box.

Notably, Mokwena lined up a team consisting of a host of fringe players in preparation of the upcoming CAF Champions League campaign.

The 2025 African champions visit Kenyan giants Gor Mahia in the first leg of their first preliminary round tie as they look to book a spot in the group stages.

Appointed in July, the South African mentor has been tasked with winning Africa's premier club competition and the Egyptian Premier League, including domestic cups.

Whether Mokwena will achieve the objectives set by the club's hierarchy remains to be seen, with Pyramids currently sitting at the summit of the log standings.
