Manchester City had to dig deep to leave Leipzig with all three points. In an entertaining match at the Red Bull Arena, Enzo Maresca’s men took the lead twice, only to see their opponents draw level each time. But Erling Haaland finally made the difference in the 78th minute, securing a precious win for the English side.

Lukeba gifts City the lead

City opened the scoring in the 37th minute through a Castello Lukeba own goal. The Leipzig defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, allowing the visitors to go into the break a goal up. The Germans responded quickly after the interval. Ridle Baku equalised in the 49th minute, bringing the match right back to life.

Manchester City regained the lead through Enzo Fernández, who scored the English side’s second goal in the 58th minute. But the visitors’ joy was short-lived: three minutes later, Antonio Nusa brought the sides level again. The teams were therefore tied at 2-2, with nearly half an hour still to play.

Haaland makes the difference

Just as Leipzig hoped to hold out, Erling Haaland finally found a way through in the 78th minute. Set up by Elliot Anderson, the Norwegian striker scored the decisive goal to give City a 3-2 win.

The win gives the English side three important points in this league phase. Despite enjoying the bulk of possession (65%), the Cityzens had to contend with a Leipzig side that had more shots on target: six to five. City therefore came through a hard-fought match, with Haaland’s clinical finishing ultimately making the difference.
