Ivory Coast continue their campaign at the WAFU B U17 tournament in Burkina Faso. The Young Elephants secured their place in the last four after drawing 1-1 with Nigeria. They will face Ghana for a place in the final and qualification for the U17 AFCON.
The Young Elephants are continuing their adventure at the WAFU B U17 tournament. Facing Nigeria in Burkina Faso, the Ivorian national team secured qualification for the semi-finals by holding the Nigerians to a 1-1 draw.
Serge Bougouyou’s men nevertheless made a strong start to the match. In the 16th minute, Alex Foussein found the back of the net to give Côte d’Ivoire the lead. The goal allowed the Young Elephants to take control of the game and hope for a victory against a formidable opponent.
But the Nigerians did not give up. Six minutes before the end of regular time, in the 84th minute, Abiodan John brought the two teams level. Despite the late equaliser, the Ivorians held on to the result they needed to continue their campaign in the competition.
Ghana, the final hurdle before the AFCON
Having qualified for the last four, the Young Elephants will now face Ghana’s Black Starlets in the semi-finals. It will be a decisive encounter for the young Ivorians, who are aiming for a place in the final, but above all qualification for the U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Against a Ghanaian side renowned for its potential, Serge Bougouyou’s charges will need to show solidity, concentration and efficiency to take this step.
The stakes are therefore high: a victory over Ghana would open the door to the U17 AFCON for the Young Elephants. Côte d’Ivoire are now one match away from achieving their continental objective.
