Who is Bachir Belloumi, the Algerian taking the Premier League by storm?

At 24, Bachir Belloumi is finally turning promise into performances and could become one of the biggest beneficiaries of Algeria’s new era.

Hull City hardly look like timid Premier League newcomers. After four matches, the Tigers remain unbeaten with two wins, two draws and eight points from 12, while scoring five goals and conceding only two. At the heart of that remarkable start is Bachir Belloumi. He provided an assist against Coventry on Matchweek 2 before announcing himself on an even bigger stage with a brace at Stamford Bridge in the 2-2 draw against Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea. He is already shaping up as a genuine candidate to become one of the Premier League’s breakout players this season.

From Mascara to the Premier League, with no shortcut

Born in Mascara on June 1, 2002, Mohamed El Bachir Belloumi grew up carrying one of Algerian football’s most famous surnames. His father, Lakhdar Belloumi, remains a national legend. Yet the younger Belloumi’s career has been anything but handed to him. He joined GC Mascara’s youth system in 2012, moved to MC Oran in 2020 and quickly reached the senior side. In his first full professional campaign, he made 28 league appearances and scored three goals.

In February 2022, he took the Portuguese route with Farense. Initially developed with the younger teams, he gradually broke through, helped the club earn promotion and then exploded in the 2023-24 Primeira Liga season with seven goals and four assists in 33 matches. On August 30, 2024, he chose another demanding challenge by joining Hull City on a contract running until 2028.

While some Algerian talents have chosen more comfortable routes towards the Gulf, Belloumi opted for the harder sporting path: Portugal, the Championship and then the Premier League. Every level had to be earned. The tougher the fight, the sweeter the reward.

Injuries slowed him down, but never broke him

His English adventure could easily have been derailed. In November 2024, against Oxford United, Belloumi suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear. He spent more than six months out and missed the rest of the season. After returning in August 2025, two further muscular injuries interrupted his progress: a hamstring problem between September and November, followed by a thigh tear that kept him out from December 2025 until March 2026.

He still returned when Hull needed him most. Despite a disrupted 2025-26 campaign, he finished the Championship season with three goals and four assists and became a play-off hero. He scored and assisted against Millwall in the semi-final before playing 76 minutes in the 1-0 Wembley final victory over Middlesbrough. Hull were back in the Premier League after nine years away.

Mahrez’s retirement creates a huge opportunity

Belloumi has already received several senior Algeria call-ups, first under Djamel Belmadi in October 2023 and later under Vladimir Petkovic in 2024, but he is still waiting for his first senior minute. This time, the context is different. Following Riyad Mahrez’s international retirement, the right-wing position is open. Anis Hadj Moussa and Badredine Bouanani provide serious competition, but Belloumi now has a powerful argument: he is delivering in the Premier League.

In the coming days, Brahim Hemdani will announce his first Algeria squad, and Belloumi’s name is widely expected to be there. The Fennecs will play Zambia on September 25, Burundi on September 29 and Niger on October 6. Three potential opportunities to finally give him what he has been waiting for since 2023: meaningful minutes, a genuine chance and the platform to show that after carrying a famous name, he is now ready to make it his own.
