Everything was decided on August 4th in Casablanca. For the third matchday of the 2026 Women's AFCON in Morocco, Ivory Coast and South Africa did what was needed to book their spots in the quarterfinals. Burkina Faso and Tanzania bow out of the tournament.

Ivory Coast solid, South Africa clinical

At the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, Ivory Coast got the job done against Tanzania, 2-1. Before halftime, Nsira Safi Ouedraogo opened the scoring thanks to an assist from Inès Konan. Konan herself doubled the lead in the 68th minute from the penalty spot. Tanzania pulled one back in the 90+9th, but it was too little, too late.

At the same time at Moulay Rachid Stadium, South Africa saw off Burkina Faso 1-0. One goal was enough: Thembi Kgatlana scored in the 21st minute, set up by Fikile Magama. The experienced 2022 champions managed the rest of the game to seal their qualification.

Contrasting journeys, but plenty to show

Ivory Coast marks a perfect return after 10 years. Reinstated following the expansion of the Women's AFCON from 12 to 16 teams, they finished unbeaten: 4-1 against Burkina Faso, 2-2 against South Africa, 2-1 against Tanzania. Seven points and first place.

South Africa struggled at times but finished strong. After a shock 1-2 loss to Tanzania and a 2-2 draw with Ivory Coast, Banyana Banyana rallied to clinch the second qualifying spot.

Burkina Faso exit with heads held high. After a heavy 1-4 defeat in their opener, they notched their first ever win in the finals 2-1 vs Tanzania. Tanzania, on their part, started strong with a 2-1 win over South Africa before suffering two defeats.
