World Cup 2026 / Algeria: after Mahrez, Ramy Bensebaïni could turn the page
After Riyad Mahrez, another stalwart of the Greens is expected to bring his international career to a close following Algeria's elimination from the 2026 World Cup.
Algeria's exit at the hands of Switzerland (2-0) in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup could truly mark the end of an era. Indeed, following Riyad Mahrez's announcement of his international retirement, Ramy Bensebaïni is also expected to turn the page, according to several Algerian media outlets. However, the defender has yet to make his decision official.
However, the Fennecs' captain himself publicly confirmed his teammate's departure, lending even more weight to this information. If made official, the national team would lose one of its most influential figures of the past decade.
With 86 caps and nine goals to his name, Ramy Bensebaïni has certainly left an indelible mark in the Algeria jersey. The most prolific defender in the history of the Greens, the Constantine native earned his first cap on January 7, 2017, against Mauritania (3-1), before netting his first goal against Cape Verde on June 1, 2018.
