2026 World Cup: Leandro Paredes handed ten-match ban by FIFA
Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes is paying the price for the violent incidents that erupted after Spain clinched the 2026 World Cup title against Argentina.
According to journalist Martyn Ziegler, FIFA's disciplinary committee has slapped Leandro Paredes with a ten-match suspension. The 32-year-old midfielder is being punished for incidents that took place on July 19, following the 2026 World Cup final, which saw Spain edge out Argentina 1-0 after extra time. The sanction covers three acts deemed to be assaults, in addition to a charge of unsportsmanlike conduct.
A brawl that proves costly for Paredes
At the final whistle, Paredes first clashed with Eric Garcia, grabbing him by the neck before pushing him away. The 2022 world champion then turned on Gavi, who was dragged to the ground in the middle of a melee involving Thiago Almada. These scenes prompted FIFA to launch disciplinary proceedings against several Albiceleste members. Paredes was charged with three separate acts.
This punishment applies only to international fixtures, meaning Paredes will still be eligible to play for Boca Juniors. His international impact, however, remains significant. With 84 caps and five goals, the midfielder could miss call-ups and see his place in Argentina's next cycle put in jeopardy. Other announced sanctions affect Nahuel Molina, suspended for seven matches, Thiago Almada for two, Roberto Ayala for three, and Gavi for one.
