World Cup 2026: Cape Verde on the brink of historic qualification

Cape Verde is edging closer to a historic first-ever qualification for the World Cup finals. In Group D, the "Blue Sharks" are currently ahead of Cameroon’s "Indomitable Lions".

The dream is turning into reality for Cape Verde. With a 2-0 victory in Mauritius on Thursday—thanks to goals from Jovane Cabral and Diney Borges—the island nation’s team is now just a few steps away from a historic ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With 16 points and a one-point lead over Cameroon, Bubista’s men are perfectly positioned to write a new chapter in Cape Verdean football. Their next match, on Tuesday in Praia against the Indomitable Lions, could send Cape Verde to the World Cup and turn into a true national celebration—as the final two matchdays of this qualifying campaign approach.
