World Cup 2026: FIFA faces a major issue to tackle

We are just four days away from the 2026 World Cup. And FIFA is grappling with yet another major challenge beyond sporting organization. This time, it’s the surge in counterfeit jersey sales.

In France, for instance, customs authorities have ramped up their checks and increased seizures. In early June, according to French media, nearly 2,300 fake jerseys of the French national team, PSG, and other clubs were intercepted in the Paris region in just five days. Most originated from China.

The phenomenon is largely driven by the high prices of official gear, prompting some fans to opt for replicas sold at a tenth of the price. In 2025, French customs seized nearly 3 million counterfeit items shipped by mail, with sports goods among the most affected.
