Argentina: Juan Sebastián Verón suspended for three months by the AFA
The Disciplinary Tribunal of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has suspended Juan Sebastián Verón for three months following the incidents that occurred during the final of the International Super Cup between Estudiantes de La Plata and Rosario Central. The Estudiantes president received the sanction on Thursday, October 15, 2026, after his team’s defeat (1-3).
The Tribunal faulted the official for entering the pitch without authorization and for his behavior toward referee Darío Herrera at the end of the match. To justify its decision, the disciplinary body relied on Articles 12, 13 and 23 of its Disciplinary Code.
Verón confronts the referee after the final
Tensions boiled over in the final minutes of the final, played at the Madre de Ciudades Stadium in Santiago del Estero. After Rosario Central’s third goal, members of both teams became involved in heated exchanges.
Juan Sebastián Verón entered the pitch to confront Darío Herrera. According to the referee’s report, the Estudiantes president directed insults at him. Footage of the match also shows the official approaching the refereeing team before security personnel escorted him away.
Rosario Central won the final 3-1. After Estudiantes opened the scoring, Ángel Di María contributed to turning the game around before Julián Fernández sealed Rosario Central’s victory.
Caiella and Angeleri also receive three-month suspensions
The Disciplinary Tribunal also sanctioned two other Estudiantes officials. Vice-president Pascual Caiella and sporting director Marcos Angeleri were each handed three-month suspensions.
The body faulted Caiella for entering the pitch without authorization and taking part in the incidents. Angeleri was sanctioned for entering the pitch and for his behavior toward the referee.
The AFA also fined Estudiantes an amount equivalent to 500 tickets at the general admission price. The Tribunal justified the sanction by citing infractions committed by the club’s officials and delegation members on the pitch and in the dressing-room area.
