Carragher criticizes Chelsea's performance after losing to Bayern Munich
It was a night to forget for Chelsea as they fell 1–3 to a dominant Bayern Munich in their opening UEFA Champions League fixture. But perhaps more painful than the result itself was the brutal verdict delivered afterwards by former Liverpool defender and outspoken pundit Jamie Carragher.
What did the former Liverpool star say?
Speaking on CBS Sports, Carragher did not hold back. He claimed the current Chelsea side bears no resemblance to the disciplined, trophy-winning team once managed by Thomas Tuchel. In his view, the Blues are nowhere near ready to challenge for the game’s biggest honors.
“They are not closer—they are further away than what that manager was doing three and a half years ago,” Carragher stated bluntly. “In terms of competing with the best teams in the Premier League, they are even further back, despite spending two billion pounds.”
His comments underscore growing frustration around the club’s direction despite massive investment in the squad.
Earlier in the evening, there was at least one positive note: young midfielder Cole Palmer was named in the starting lineup against the German giants, marking his 100th appearance for the club—a personal milestone on an otherwise disappointing night.
