David Silva to resume his career in Hong Kong
David Silva is preparing to make a most unexpected return to professional football. Out of the game since 2023, the former Spain international is expected to join Supreme Shatin, a club competing in Hong Kong’s championship, according to HK Kickers.
A retirement that ultimately proved short-lived
David Silva ended his career in 2023 after his spell at Real Sociedad. A serious injury to his left knee, a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament, brought forward the end of his professional career. “It’s a very sad day for me. It’s time to say goodbye to something to which I have devoted my entire life,” the Spaniard said at the time in a video announcing his retirement.
Three years later, the 2010 world champion therefore appears ready to return to action. According to HK Kickers, Silva is expected to sign a short-term contract with Supreme Shatin, a member of the Hong Kong Premier League. Silva’s return would thus be a fine coup for Supreme Shatin, which is looking to expand its ambitions on the local scene.
A Manchester City legend
Before this surprising Hong Kong interlude, David Silva had built one of the finest records in Spanish and English football. With Manchester City, he played 436 matches, scoring 77 goals and providing 136 assists. He notably won several English league titles and established himself as one of the most iconic players in the club’s history.
With Spain, Silva also won the 2010 World Cup, as well as Euro 2008 and Euro 2012. If he finalises his move to Supreme Shatin, the 40-year-old attacking midfielder will therefore write a particularly surprising final chapter to an already exceptional career.
