Denmark: Bo Johansson has died

Bo “Bosse” Johansson has died at the age of 83. His family confirmed the news to Danish broadcaster TV 2 Sport this Thursday, October 15, 2026. The former Swedish coach managed Denmark between 1996 and 2000 and led the national team to the quarter-finals of the 1998 World Cup in France.

The 1998 World Cup, his greatest legacy

Bo Johansson took charge of the Danish national team in 1996. Over four years, he managed the team in 40 matches and qualified it for two major tournaments: the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. It was in France that the coach made his mark on Danish football history.

After a convincing group stage, Denmark overcame Nigeria 4-1 in the round of 16, securing their place in the quarter-finals. The Danes then lost 3-2 to Brazil, who would go on to reach the final. Nevertheless, this elimination remains associated with one of the finest campaigns in the history of the national team.

A coach who won titles in several countries

Johansson’s influence also extended to club football. In 1994, he won the Danish league title with Silkeborg IF. In Sweden, he had led Östers IF to two consecutive national titles, in 1980 and 1981. His career also took him to Finland, Greece and Norway.

With Molde FK, he won the Norwegian Cup in 2005. He later ended his career on the bench as assistant coach of Åtvidabergs FF in 2010. Danish Football Association director of football Peter Møller told TV 2 Sport that he was a man who had made his mark on Danish football through his humanity, humour and ability to build his players’ confidence.
