FC Barcelona: injury confirmed, Frenkie de Jong responds

As FC Barcelona confirmed this Thursday evening, Frenkie de Jong has suffered a serious injury to his right knee during the 2026 World Cup. The Dutchman, however, continued to play.

The Netherlands international likely aggravated his condition, putting him at risk of missing part of next season. This has led to some questioning his commitment to FC Barcelona. That’s what prompted the Blaugrana's statement this Thursday to set the record straight.

"During the World Cup, I injured my knee. After the first examinations, the doctors told me it was only a minor injury and that I wouldn’t make it worse if I kept playing. The only issue was playing through the pain, but I’ve done that throughout my career whenever I could help the team, whether for my club or my country.", wrote Frenkie de Jong.

"During my vacation, I returned to Barcelona for further tests. They revealed that the injury was more severe than initially thought. (…) Every day, I work to be in the best possible shape. I take my profession, my body, and my responsibility to the team very seriously. But sometimes there are things you just can’t control, and this injury is one of them," De Jong also explained.
