A history bigger than results
Egypt’s relationship with the FIFA World Cup has always carried more emotion than numbers.
The Pharaohs have never enjoyed a long run in the tournament and before the 2026 edition, they had still never won a match at the finals. Yet their World Cup history remains full of iconic nights, historic goals and painful memories that shaped Egyptian football across different generations.
From Abdelrahman Fawzi in 1934 to Magdy Abdelghany in 1990 and Mohamed Salah in 2018, Egypt’s best World Cup moments have often come in matches that ended with frustration.
1934: Hungary 4-2 Egypt
Egypt’s first World Cup match remains one of the most important games in African & Arab football history.
In Italy 1934, Egypt became the first African and Arab nation to appear at the World Cup. The Pharaohs faced Hungary in the round of 16 and lost 4-2 but the match gave Egyptian football its first global hero.
Abdelrahman Fawzi scored twice bringing Egypt back from 2-0 down to 2-2 before Hungary eventually pulled away. The result ended Egypt’s campaign immediately but the performance left a historic mark.
It was not just Egypt’s debut. It was the first real appearance of African and Arab football on the biggest stage.
1990: Netherlands 1-1 Egypt
After 56 year away from the World Cup, Egypt returned in Italy 1990 under Mahmoud El Gohary.
Their opening match against the Netherlands was a huge test. The Dutch side had major names such as Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, Ronald Koeman and Marco van Basten while Egypt entered the tournament with a disciplined defensive identity and huge pressure on their shoulders.
The Netherlands went ahead through Wim Kieft but Egypt refused to collapse. Magdy Abdelghany converted a late penalty to secure a 1-1 draw and give the Pharaohs one of their most famous World Cup results.
For many Egyptian fans, this match remains the country’s greatest World Cup performance because of the level of the opponent and the timing of the comeback.
1990: Republic of Ireland 0-0 Egypt
Egypt’s second match in 1990 was not beautiful but it became historically important.
The Pharaohs drew 0-0 with the Republic of Ireland in Palermo in a game remembered for its slow rhythm and repeated use of the back-pass to the goalkeeper. The match later became part of a wider debate about football’s rules and the need to make the game faster.
From an Egyptian perspective, the draw kept qualification hopes alive before the final group match. It also showed how difficult Egypt were to beat under El Gohary.
This was not a glamorous night but it became one of the World Cup games that football historians still discuss.
1990: England 1-0 Egypt
Egypt entered the final Group F match against England with a real chance of reaching the knockout stage.
For more than an hour, the Pharaohs stayed in the game and frustrated Bobby Robson’s side. But Mark Wright scored the only goal with a header after a Paul Gascoigne free kick ending Egypt’s dream of a historic qualification.
The defeat was painful because Egypt had competed well in a tough group and conceded only two goals across three matches.
Even without a win, the 1990 campaign remains one of the most respected chapters in Egyptian football history.
2018: Egypt 0-1 Uruguay
Egypt’s return to the World Cup in 2018 came after 28 year of waiting.
The opening match against Uruguay was filled with emotion especially because Mohamed Salah was still recovering from the shoulder injury he suffered in the Champions League final with Liverpool.
Salah stayed on the bench but Egypt produced a brave defensive display. Mohamed El Shenawy impressed in goal while Hector Cuper’s team kept Luis Suarez & Edinson Cavani quiet for long periods.
The dream of earning a point disappeared in the final minute when Jose Gimenez scored with a header. It was a heartbreaking defeat but it also showed Egypt could compete against a powerful South American side.
2018: Russia 3-1 Egypt
The second match of the 2018 campaign brought Salah back to the World Cup stage.
Egypt held Russia to a goalless first half but the game changed quickly after the break. An own goal from Ahmed Fathy opened the door for the hosts before Denis Cheryshev & Artem Dzyuba added two more goals.
Salah scored Egypt’s only goal from the penalty spot but the 3-1 defeat effectively ended the Pharaohs’ hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
It was a painful night because expectations had been high especially after Salah’s incredible season with Liverpool.
2018: Saudi Arabia 2-1 Egypt
Egypt’s final match in Russia produced two unforgettable moments despite another defeat.
Salah scored with a clever lob to give Egypt the lead becoming the country’s modern World Cup symbol. But the greater historic moment came through Essam El Hadary.
At 45 year and 161 day, the legendary goalkeeper became the oldest player ever to appear in a World Cup match. He also saved a penalty adding another iconic scene to his incredible career.
Saudi Arabia eventually won 2-1 with a stoppage time goal leaving Egypt without a point. Still, El Hadary’s record and Salah’s goal made the match one of the most memorable in Egyptian World Cup history.
