USM Alger head coach Lamine N’Diaye has already turned his focus to a high stakes CAF Confederation Cup final against Zamalek warning that his side will face a completely different challenge after navigating a chaotic semi-final to secure their place.

The Algerian side booked their spot in the final after a 1-1 draw against Olympic Safi advancing on away goals following a tense and disrupted encounter in Morocco.

Semi-final played in “battle” conditions

The match in Safi was far from routine. Kick-off was delayed by around 80 minute due to crowd trouble, with USM Alger refusing to leave the dressing room until safety guarantees were provided.

Once play began, the tension carried onto the pitch.

Ahmed Khaldi gave USM Alger the lead from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time, before Moussa Kone equalised in the 75 minute. The game was repeatedly interrupted leading to nearly 30 minute of added time.

N’Diaye did not hide his frustration with the conditions.

“It was a real battle... There were unsportsmanlike things, too many stoppages. It breaks the rhythm of the game” he said.

Mental strength earns final spot

Despite the environment, the coach praised his players for their composure.

“The credit goes to the players.. They stayed calm and showed strong mentality. Even after the equaliser, they kept their balance. This qualification is deserved” N’Diaye said.

The result sends USM Alger into their second Confederation Cup final as they aim to add another continental title to their recent success after winning the competition in the 2022 /23 season.

Zamalek test already on the horizon

Attention has quickly shifted to the final, where Egyptian giants Zamalek await.

N’Diaye expects a different kind of contest, tactically demanding and played at a higher level.

“Facing Zamalek is always a big challenge.. They have history, quality and experience in these competitions” he said.

The USM Alger coach also expressed hope that the final will be played in a more controlled and professional atmosphere, in contrast to the semi-final conditions.

“We want football to be played in the right spirit” he ended.
