Attention was focused on other names, notably Yan Diomandé, who recently transferred to Real Madrid, and the other attacking leaders of the Ivorian national team. On his first appearance for the Elephants, Malick Yalcouyé nevertheless found himself in the spotlight after being directly involved in both goals in the 2-0 victory over Ghana on Thursday in Bouaké.

Starting on his international debut, the Brighton midfielder first opened the scoring before winning the penalty converted by Franck Kessié. It was an introduction marked by two decisive actions.

Yalcouyé opens his international account

Yalcouyé made his mark for the first time just before half-time. Set up by Franck Kessié at the edge of the box, the 20-year-old midfielder unleashed a shot that found the back of the net to give Ivory Coast the lead.

The goal allowed him to open his international account on his very first cap and put the Elephants ahead at half-time.

A penalty won after the break

After scoring, Yalcouyé continued to make his presence felt in the match. Sent through on the left, he entered the Ghanaian penalty area before being brought down by Abdul Fatawu Issahaku. The referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot.

Franck Kessié stepped up to take it and made it 2-0. Yalcouyé had thus played a direct part in both Ivorian goals, just minutes after scoring the first.

Diomandé and Diallo expected, Yalcouyé decisive

Before the match, Yan Diomandé was among the most closely watched players. His recent transfer to Real Madrid, following his spell at RB Leipzig, had naturally put the forward in the spotlight. He started and played the entire match.

Another player who had been expected to feature, Amad Diallo did not take part in the match. The Manchester United forward was unavailable due to injury.

In this context, Yalcouyé used his first cap to respond on the pitch. A goal and a penalty won meant he was directly responsible for both Ivorian goals. On his debut for the Elephants, the Brighton midfielder therefore played a central role in the victory over Ghana.
