Although Real Madrid managed to defeat Alavés yesterday, the refereeing was far from convincing. Xabi Alonso did not hesitate to voice his criticism.

On Sunday evening, Real Madrid overcame Alavés (2-1) away from home. Los Merengues got the crucial win thanks to yet another goal from Kylian Mbappé. This victory was vitally important for Xabi Alonso, whose position on the royal club’s bench has remained fragile in recent weeks. After the final whistle, the Spanish coach addressed several topics in his post-match press conference, including the officiating.

When asked about a possible penalty not awarded to Vinicius, Xabi Alonso responded firmly: “I’ll talk about the incident, not the referee. For me, it’s a clear penalty. Vini is extremely quick, there’s definite contact... What really surprises me is that VAR wasn’t even consulted. Still, this isn’t anything new. We have to keep going.”

Pressed again about the presence of González Fuertes in the VAR room—the referee who previously threatened Real Madrid in a cup final—Xabi replied: “You said it yourself. I have nothing more to add.”
