Mamelodi Sundowns have announced the signing of South Africa U20 national team captain Lazola Maku on a free transfer.

The 19-year-old midfielder had been in the wilderness after parting ways with Betway Premiership side Siwelele FC at the end of his contract last season.

He subsequently underwent assessments in Austria with SV Ried and newly promoted second-tier outfit FC Wacker Innsbruck.

However, Maku returned home for the COSAFA U20 Championship, where Amajita beat Mozambique 2-1 in the final to retain their crown last month.

Notably, he was also part of the squad that lifted a first-ever U20 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) after a 1-0 win over Morocco in the final last year in May.

Maku earned a spot in the team of the tournament after catching the eye in the heart of midfield during the continental showpiece.

His exploits saw him get a run in the first-team at Siwelele, making five league appearances under then-head coach Lehlohonolo Seema last season.

Now, he is set for a new chapter at Chloorkop with the reigning African champions, as he looks to establish himself as one of the finest in his position.
