UEFA Champions League, PSG - FC Barcelona: probable line-ups
PSG and FC Barcelona face each other at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, with important absences and several expected selection decisions in both starting XIs.
Two teams who have collected six points from their opening two matches, in a clash that promises fireworks. On Tuesday, October 20, Paris Saint-Germain host FC Barcelona at the Parc des Princes at 9 p.m., on matchday three of the Champions League. Beyond the prestige of the fixture, the match could have a major bearing on the race for the top places in the league phase.
PSG forced to reshuffle their defence
As the European champions for the past two seasons, Paris head into this fixture with a major question mark over their left flank. A muscle injury has ruled an important starter out for PSG, forcing Luis Enrique to consider reshuffling his defensive line. The Spanish coach will have to choose between preserving his team’s automatisms and opting for a profile better suited to dealing with the opposition’s bursts of acceleration.
Control of midfield and the quality of their pressing immediately after losing the ball will also be decisive for the Ligue 1 champions. Against an opponent who likes to move forward quickly, any imbalance in transitions could prove costly.
Barcelona weakened at the back but ambitious
Hansi Flick must also cope with absences in his defensive department. Two confirmed withdrawals have weakened the Catalan club’s rotation options, even though the squad has welcomed some encouraging returns. The list of players selected for the trip to Paris illustrates this contrast between defensive difficulties and the return of attacking options.
On an impressive run in La Liga, Barcelona are expected to look to impose their possession game and high press. But defensive positioning and the spaces left behind them could present opportunities for PSG. The duel between the two coaches therefore promises to be as tactical as it is spectacular.
