The former captain of the Elephants looked back on a personal pain linked to the death of his father during a panel on Facebook. Despite the success and opportunities football has brought him, the former Ivory Coast international still harbors a deep regret.

Former Ivory Coast captain Serey Dié has revealed a pain that continues to weigh on him. During a panel organized on Facebook, the former midfielder spoke about his family history and his regret at not being able to let his father enjoy the fruits of his football career.

Behind the victories, honors and opportunities offered by football lies an intimate pain: that of not having been able to share his success with his father, who has since passed away. An absence that gives a particular dimension to the former Ivory Coast international’s journey.

A father reluctant to accept his choice of football

In the early days of his career, Serey Dié’s decision to make football his profession was not universally supported within his family. His father, concerned about the difficult living conditions of some players at the time, doubted that the sport could guarantee his son a stable future.

“My father did not approve of my choice to pursue football. Based on the precarious living conditions of some players at the time, Dad kept telling me that there was no future in football,” he said.

Despite these initial reservations, Serey Dié pursued his dream, eventually establishing himself in professional football and earning honors with the Ivory Coast national team.

“My late father cannot enjoy everything I have achieved”

Although football enabled him to fulfill his ambitions and benefit from many blessings, the former captain of the Elephants nevertheless harbors a deep regret: that of not having been able to share these achievements with his father.

“My late father cannot enjoy everything I have achieved,” he lamented.

The sentence conveys the full pain of a man aware of how far he has come, yet marked by the absence of the person with whom he would have so loved to share his achievements.

“I wish he were still alive so that he could also enjoy all these blessings that the Lord granted me through football,” he added emotionally.

Through this testimony, Serey Dié reminds us that professional success, however great, cannot replace the presence of loved ones. For the former Ivory Coast international, football was a remarkable means of fulfillment, but it will also remain associated with this irreversible regret: not having been able to give his father the opportunity to fully enjoy the fruits of his efforts.

The confession highlights the human dimension of a sporting journey and reminds us that behind the successes of football’s biggest figures, there are sometimes wounds that neither trophies nor glory can erase.
