Ronald Donkor waited until the 89th minute to find the back of the net again. The Ghanaian midfielder handed the New York Red Bulls a 1-0 victory away at Columbus Crew, ending a run of 40 appearances without a goal for the club.

Ronald Donkor picked the perfect moment to make his mark again. With the match between Columbus Crew and the New York Red Bulls seemingly heading for a goalless draw, the Ghanaian midfielder struck in the 89th minute to score the only goal of the game. His late effort sent the Red Bulls back to New York with all three points.

The goal was particularly significant for Donkor. His previous MLS goal had come on April 22 against D.C. United. That night, he was part of an attacking shootout between the two sides, scoring one of the Red Bulls’ four goals in a match that eventually ended 4-4.

Since then, the Ghanaian had several opportunities to find the net again but failed to do so. He finally had to wait until the trip to Columbus to score his second league goal of the season. This one was especially valuable, as it directly secured the victory for his team.

Donkor was making his 23rd MLS appearance of the season, having started every one of those matches. That figure does not mean he had gone 23 games without scoring, however, as his previous goal came on April 22. It simply represents his number of league appearances this season at the time of his latest goal.

The reference to 40 appearances without scoring relates to an earlier period. Before opening his account against D.C. United, Donkor had made his first 40 appearances for the Red Bulls without finding the net, including 20 starts. That run came to an end in April.

Several months later, the Ghanaian midfielder has endured another wait before getting back on the scoresheet. This time, he did more than end his drought: his late goal also secured an important away victory for the Red Bulls.
