Obituary: Diogo Jota, Liverpool striker, has died
Diogo Jota

European football, and particularly Portuguese football, is in mourning. Liverpool star Diogo Jota has passed away.

Portuguese football is grieving for two players this Wednesday. In a road accident, Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who played for Penafiel, lost their lives.

A deeply saddening development that prompted a response from the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proença.

"The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are utterly devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva, this morning in Spain. Far more than just a fantastic player, with nearly 50 caps for the national team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by teammates and opponents alike, a man whose infectious joy and community spirit made him a role model. On behalf of myself and the Portuguese Football Federation, I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs they respectively represented. We have lost two champions. The loss of Diogo and André Silva is an irreparable blow to Portuguese football, and we will do everything possible to honor their legacy every day," he said.
