Real Madrid accused of "Grave Mistake" over Rodri
Speaking on Radio MARCA’s programme La Tribu, Gómez praised Rodri’s presentation as a Barcelona player noting that the midfielder revealed previous contacts had taken place with Real Madrid officials before he ultimately decided to join the Catalan giants.
"I believe Real Madrid made a grave mistake by letting Rodri slip away, because he would have provided a massive boost to their midfield" Gómez said.
Lauding the midfielder's status in world football, Gómez added:
"He is a world champion, a fantastic player, in fact, the best. We have always held his quality in high regard and I wish him every success in this new chapter"
Fierce criticism of Barcelona's Álvarez pursuit
Addressing the ongoing transfer saga surrounding Argentine forward Julián Álvarez, Gómez maintained that while the striker has every right to choose his next destination, Barcelona’s behind the scenes negotiation tactics were unacceptable.
"Barcelona manipulated things behind Atlético's back, in a very despicable manner... this is unacceptable in football" Gómez argued, directly describing Barcelona's institutional behaviour during the pursuit as "arrogant" "presumptuous" and "haughty".
Praise for Florentino Pérez's conduct
In contrast to his criticism of Barcelona's leadership, Gómez highlighted the approach of Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, describing his handling of the situation as professional and transparent.
"The only person who acted properly in all of this is Florentino Pérez" Gómez remarked.
According to his account, the Real Madrid president engaged in discussions with Álvarez before directly reaching out to Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo to keep communication transparent between the two clubs.
