PSG clinches the Intercontinental Cup and completes historic sextuple
On December 17, 2025, in Qatar, Paris Saint-Germain captured the 2025 FIFA Intercontinental Cup by overcoming Brazilian giants Flamengo after a dramatic penalty shootout. The Rouge & Bleu close out the year with an astonishing six trophies added to their collection.
PSG has now become just the third team in history to achieve a sextuple in a single calendar year. Only Barcelona, led by Pep Guardiola in 2009, and Bayern Munich, coached by Hansi Flick in 2020, had previously reached this milestone. Luis Enrique’s men add this Intercontinental trophy to the five already secured this year: the Trophée des Champions, Ligue 1, Coupe de France, Champions League, and UEFA Super Cup.
Safonov, the hero of the night
The match kicked off under Parisian control. Fabian Ruiz thought he’d opened the scoring as early as the 9th minute, but the ball had already gone out of play before Brazilian keeper Agustin Rossi could get a touch. The contest soon evened out against a highly aggressive Brazilian side. PSG finally broke the deadlock in the 38th minute. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia finished off a cross from Désiré Doué, who was making his first start since October 29. Keeper Rossi could only get a slight touch, unable to prevent the goal. Flamengo elevated their game after the break. The South American champions won a penalty in the 62nd minute after Marquinhos left his foot trailing. Jorginho stepped up and calmly converted with his trademark run-up.
Extra time couldn’t separate the two teams. The penalty shootout became the stage for Matvey Safonov’s heroics. The Russian goalkeeper, chosen over Lucas Chevalier despite the latter’s return from injury, saved four consecutive spot-kicks. He denied Saul Niguez, Pedro, Leo Pereira, and Luiz Araujo. Dembélé and Barcola missed their penalties for Paris, but Nuno Mendes put PSG in front before Safonov sealed the outcome once and for all.
An exceptional year
This victory caps off a sensational 2025 for PSG. Paris set a new record with 173 goals across all competitions, surpassing their 2017 tally. In the Champions League, Les Parisiens netted a remarkable 51 goals in the calendar year, an unprecedented feat in the competition’s history. The Parisian club narrowly missed out on an unprecedented septuple, falling to Chelsea (3-0) in the Club World Cup final in July. Despite that disappointment, this sextuple firmly cements this PSG team in the annals of world football.
