The Tunisian League suspended Esperance defender Mohamed Tougai for 12 month following violent Tunis Derby clashes shocking the football world.

Severe sanctions following derby chaos

The historic clash between Esperance Sportive de Tunis and Club Africain was billed as a highly anticipated title decider but rapidly devolved into chaos.

Following intense altercations on the pitch and in the dressing rooms, the Tunisian National Professional Football League issued exceptionally harsh penalties.

According to Diwan FM, the disciplinary committee suspended Algerian center back Mohamed Amine Tougai for a staggering 12 months.

Official reports labeled his post match actions as dangerous and highly unsporting prompting the league to make a massive example of the player to curb stadium violence.

A title celebration marred by suspensions

While Club Africain ultimately secured the league championship, ending a grueling period of domestic struggles for the team, the disciplinary fallout remains the dominant story.

Club Africain striker Firas Chaouat was also implicated in the post-match melee and received a three-match suspension.

However the sheer severity of Tougai’s ban has left the Esperance fanbase outraged. The club's hierarchy views the punishment as entirely disproportionate to the events and is already preparing an aggressive legal appeal to overturn the decision.

World Cup disruption for the Desert Foxes

This devastating suspension arrives at the worst possible moment for Tougai.

The towering defender is currently stationed with the Algerian national team, deeply embedded in their World Cup 2026 campaign. Algeria is scheduled to open their tournament against Argentina next Wednesday 17 June in a challenging group that also features Austria and Jordan.

While the domestic ban does not legally prevent him from playing international fixtures, it casts a heavy psychological shadow over his preparations and forces the Algerian coaching staff to manage a massive off-pitch distraction.
