Real Madrid may be on the verge of a historic turning point in the coming weeks. For the first time in nearly two decades, Florentino Pérez will face a genuine challenger in the club's presidential elections.

The electoral commission has approved the candidacy of businessman Enrique Riquelme, thus ending a long streak of uncontested re-elections for the current Merengue president. "After twenty years, we can finally vote again," Riquelme declared after officially submitting his candidacy in Valdebebas.

The businessman also sought to reassure Real Madrid's socios: "This is not a candidacy against anyone. This is a candidacy for Real Madrid. We have an exciting project. I urge the members not to be afraid." The official election date is expected to be set in the coming days.
