The Prince of Barcelona: Lamine Yamal makes history with major global award

Barcelona rising star Lamine Yamal crowned the world’s best young athlete on Monday 20 April after winning the Laureus Award during the 2026 ceremony held in Madrid.

The 17 year old’s recognition comes after a standout year that confirmed his status as one of football’s most exciting talents.

Recognition for a breakthrough season

Yamal was honoured with the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award, a prize that highlights the most outstanding young athlete across all sports.

His performances with Barcelona over the past year placed him firmly among the leading contenders, with the jury rewarding his rapid rise at the highest level.

The winger has become a regular figure in Barcelona’s starting lineup delivering decisive performances despite his age and handling expectations that continue to grow around him.

A night dominated by Spanish success

The ceremony in Madrid also saw Carlos Alcaraz take home the award for World Sportsman of the Year capping another strong season for the Spanish tennis star.

It was a night that reflected Spain’s growing influence across multiple sports, with Yamal and Alcaraz sharing the spotlight in front of a global audience.

PSG recognised after European triumph

Paris Saint Germain were named Team of the Year following their UEFA Champions League triumph last season. The French club’s continental success earned them recognition among the world’s top sporting achievements of the year.
