Leicester City is officially on the market, but its price could complicate negotiations. According to talkSPORT, the Thai owners of King Power hope to receive up to £225 million, or around €260 million, for the sale of the club. That is a considerable sum for a team now playing in League One, the third tier of English football.

From English champions to the third tier

Leicester made history in English football by winning the Premier League in 2016 under Claudio Ranieri. The club then competed in the Champions League and won the FA Cup in 2021. But the Foxes’ trajectory gradually changed. Relegated to the Championship in 2023, the club quickly returned to the top flight before suffering another relegation in 2025. At the end of the 2025-2026 season, Leicester also left the second tier and now play in League One.

The sporting difficulties were accompanied by financial and organisational problems. The club notably suffered a six-point deduction for failing to comply with the English league’s financial rules.

King Power wants to turn the page

The Thai group King Power, which has owned Leicester since 2010, is now looking for a buyer. After Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha’s death in 2018, his son Aiyawatt took charge of the group and the club. According to Sky News, Citi, the bank overseeing the sale process, has asked interested parties to submit their bids by the end of the week, with a deadline set for Friday, October 16.

Among the potential buyers mentioned are an American consortium and Scottish businessman of Indian origin Neil Lal, who has already expressed interest in the club. However, no takeover has been confirmed at this stage.
