The Democratic Republic of Congo’s historic qualification for the 2026 World Cup continues to spark reactions, this time from European clubs. According to The Athletic, West Ham United has approached FIFA following the delayed return of Aaron Wan-Bissaka to the club.

Controversy over extended celebrations

After their playoff victory over Jamaica, Congolese authorities took days outside the FIFA window to organize celebrations for this historic feat, including an official reception with President Félix Tshisekedi. As a result, several internationals were unable to return to their clubs on time.

This delay notably prevented Wan-Bissaka from taking part in an FA Cup quarter-final with West Ham United against Leeds United. It was a crucial match, ultimately lost in a penalty shootout. The London club believes the defender’s presence could have changed the outcome.

Still according to The Athletic, West Ham had even arranged a special flight for the player’s return, but the trip could not be made in time. The case is now in FIFA’s hands, amid growing tensions between international call-ups and the demands of European clubs.
