FIFA has appointed English referee Michael Oliver to officiate the first round of 16 match at the World Cup between Morocco and one of the three host nations, Canada.

The English official will be assisted by his compatriots Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring, while Dutchman Danny Makkelie will serve as the fourth official. Another Dutchman, Hessel Steegstra, will take on the role of reserve assistant referee.

Born on February 20, 1985, Michael Oliver is a professional English referee, holding professional status since 2012. He officiated at the 2019 U-20 World Cup in Poland, Euro 2024, as well as the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Canada reached the round of 16 after a 1-0 victory over South Africa, courtesy of a dramatic late goal by Stéphen Eustaquio (90+2’), while the Atlas Lions knocked out the Netherlands on penalties (1-1, 3-2 on pens).

This clash between the world’s 30th and 7th-ranked teams is scheduled for July 4, 2026 at 17:00 GMT at Houston’s NRG Stadium.
