After 1–1 Draw: Egypt rely on Shobeir’s heroics to escape Cape Verde in tense shootout

Egypt concluded their training camp in the UAE with 2 - 0 penalty shootout victory over Cape Verde after the match ended 1- 1 in regulation time on Monday in the third place match of the Al Ain International tournament at the Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in the United Arab Emirates.

With Mohamed Salah rested and excused from the game, the Pharaohs used the friendly as testing ground ahead of AFCON 2025 in Morocco rotating heavily while still fielding competitive XI.

How the goals came

Cape Verde struck first:

  • 7’ – Garry Rodrigues (1 - 0)

The winger put the Blue Sharks ahead from the penalty spot sending Mohamed El Shenawy the wrong way after early foul in the box.

Egypt grew into the game after the setback and were rewarded after the break:

  • 57’ – Omar Marmoush (1 - 1)

The Man City forward finished confidently from close range after smart combination play restoring parity and capping Egypt’s best spell of pressure.

Despite chances for Mostafa Mohamed & Marmoush in the final minutes, Egypt were unable to decide the match in regular time and went to penalty kicks.
