Beşiktaş terminates Jean Onana's contract by mutual agreement

Beşiktaş officially announced on Monday the end of its journey with Jean Emile Junior Onana. The Istanbul club revealed the mutual termination of the Cameroonian midfielder’s contract, thus bringing an end to a stint that never truly lived up to expectations.

In a statement sent to the Turkish Public Disclosure Platform (KAP), Beşiktaş confirmed his departure.

"Our contract with professional footballer Jean Emile Junior Onana Onana has been terminated by mutual agreement," the club announced.

This decision comes after a difficult period for the 26-year-old, who never managed to secure a lasting place in Beşiktaş’s midfield. Signed in the summer of 2023 from RC Lens, Onana was initially presented as a midfielder capable of bringing energy, strength, and a combative edge to the team.

A tough Turkish experience

The Cameroonian international, however, struggled to earn the trust of his coaches. After an inconsistent start with Beşiktaş, he was loaned out to Olympique de Marseille in January 2024. Wearing the Marseille shirt, he featured in several matches but never established himself as an undisputed starter.

Upon his return to Turkey, his situation did not really improve. His playing time remained limited, and he was subsequently loaned out multiple times, notably to Genoa and then to Servette FC, in a bid to regain some regularity.

A career that began in France

Trained in Cameroon, Jean Onana made his way to Europe via Portugal before continuing his development in France. He truly made a name for himself at Bordeaux, where his performances in midfield caught the attention of several clubs.

His move to RC Lens then offered him the chance to experience the Champions League and compete at the highest European level. Despite his interesting athletic profile, his career has since been hampered by frequent club changes and a lack of continuity.

At Beşiktaş, his adventure now officially comes to an end. As a free agent, Jean Onana will now have to find a new destination to revive a career that once promised so much.
