CAF interclub competitions: preliminary draw set for August 6 in Cairo
The clubs participating in Africa’s two premier competitions will soon discover their opponents for the preliminary rounds.
Season kickoff in Cairo
The preliminary draw for the CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup will be held on Thursday, August 6 at CAF headquarters in Cairo. This event will officially launch the 2026-2027 interclub season.
Sundowns and USM Alger, reigning champions
Mamelodi Sundowns clinched the 2025-2026 Champions League title at the expense of AS FAR, securing a 1-0 win in Pretoria followed by a 1-1 draw in Rabat. In the Confederation Cup, USM Alger overcame Zamalek 1-0 in Algiers, lost 1-0 in Cairo in the return leg, and ultimately triumphed on penalties (8-7).
A schedule already set
The preliminary round will get underway from September 4, 2026. The second round kicks off on October 16, before the group stage begins on November 27. The knockout phase will commence on February 26, 2027.
This tight schedule will demand rigorous preparation, especially to anticipate continental travel and the overlap with domestic competitions.
