Fiorentina: Paolo Vanoli Officially Appointed as New Head Coach

Fiorentina have officially appointed Paolo Vanoli as their new first-team head coach. The Italian manager returns to Florence after coaching the club last season, with the task of reviving a team in serious difficulty following a disastrous start to the Serie A campaign.

Paolo Vanoli is once again Fiorentina’s head coach. The Italian club officially confirmed his return overnight from Sunday to Monday, just hours after announcing Fabio Grosso’s departure.

“ACF Fiorentina announces that it has entrusted Mr Paolo Vanoli with the technical management of the First Team,” the club said in an official statement. Fiorentina also thanked Vanoli for immediately accepting the opportunity to return to the helm with enthusiasm.

The 54-year-old coach had already arrived at the Viola Park on Monday morning to prepare for his return. The Vanoli era is therefore officially underway once again in Florence.

Grosso lasted only a few weeks

Vanoli’s return comes after Fabio Grosso was dismissed, having arrived during the summer with high expectations. The Italian coach ultimately managed just four competitive matches before being relieved of his duties by the club’s hierarchy.

His departure was a direct consequence of Fiorentina’s disastrous start to the Serie A season. After a convincing Coppa Italia victory over Benevento, the club suffered three consecutive league defeats.

Fiorentina first suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat away to AS Roma before being humiliated again at home by newly promoted Frosinone, losing 3-0. The third defeat, suffered at home against Torino after Fiorentina had taken the lead, ultimately sealed Grosso’s fate.

With nine goals conceded in three league games, Fiorentina had recorded the worst defensive start in the club’s history after three Serie A rounds.

A project weakened despite €130 million investment

The situation is all the more surprising given Fiorentina’s high ambitions during the summer. The club reportedly invested around €130 million to sign 13 new players, with Fabio Grosso chosen as a key figure in the new project.

The coach was expected to implement his preferred 4-3-3 system. However, a heavily revamped squad, with several reinforcements arriving late in the transfer window, prevented him from quickly imposing his ideas.

The lack of available wingers in particular forced him to change his plans, moving first to a 4-3-1-2 and more recently to a 4-2-3-1. His constant rotation of players and formations also raised questions as Fiorentina struggled to establish a clear collective identity.

Vanoli returns with a clear mission

In an attempt to turn the situation around, Fiorentina’s hierarchy have therefore opted for a familiar solution: Paolo Vanoli. The Italian coach already managed the team last season and helped secure their survival.

His return comes at a particularly tense moment. Vanoli will have to quickly stabilize a heavily revamped squad, restore defensive solidity and, above all, finally get Fiorentina’s Serie A season back on track.

The decision to bring in an experienced figure could also help the club save time. Unlike Grosso, Vanoli already knows the environment in Florence, the club’s structure and part of the squad.

The priority will now be to stop the negative spiral and restore confidence within a squad that, despite the club’s significant investment during the transfer window, has made a disastrous start to the league campaign.
