Five games, five goals — Brahim Díaz writes AFCON history against Cameroon
The Moroccan national football team finished first half with 1-0 lead over Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final.
The lead came thanks to a goal scored by Real Madrid star Brahim Diaz in what has become historic tournament for him.
Playing in front of packed Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Diaz struck in the 26 minute to give the Atlas Lions the lead finishing from close range after following up Ayoub El Kaabi’s header from corner.
Diaz extends scoring record in a single AFCON edition
With that goal, Diaz moved to five goals in the current Africa Cup of Nations, strengthening his position as Morocco’s top scorer in a single edition of the tournament.
The 25 year old has now pulled clear of his closest challenger in this edition, Ayoub El Kaabi and surpassed legendary Moroccan figures such as Youssouf Hadji & Sofiane Boufal all of whom scored maximum of three goal in single AFCON tournament.
Joining an Elite group in Arab Football history
Diaz’s latest strike also places him among elite group in Arab football. He is now level with Egypt’s Mohamed Diab “Diba” (1957) and Mohamed Nagy “Gedo” (2010) as the most prolific Arab scorers in single AFCON edition.
Only two player remain ahead of him on that list:
- Egyptian Hossam Hassan (7 goals)
- Egyptian Hassan El Shazly (6 goals)
Perhaps the most remarkable achievement of the night is Diaz’s unprecedented consistency. The Real Madrid attacker has become the first player in Africa Cup of Nations history to score in five consecutive matches within single edition of the tournament.
No player from any nation has previously managed that feat since the competition’s inception, a statistic that underlines Diaz’s extraordinary impact on Morocco’s 2025 AFCON campaign.
