Ghana: Carlos Queiroz officially takes charge of the Black Stars
Carlos Queiroz officially took up his post as head coach of the Ghana national team this Thursday, April 23, 2023, during a solemn ceremony in Accra. The new manager did not hide the magnitude of the task ahead. Speaking to the press, the Portuguese tactician outlined his ambitions, shared his emotions, and issued a call for unity just weeks before the 2026 World Cup.
Right from his official presentation at the Alisa Hotel, the new head coach set the tone.
"I've managed many teams throughout my career, but this is the greatest challenge I've ever faced," he declared.
A powerful admission from someone who has worked with institutions like Real Madrid CF and Manchester United.
Facing the immense expectations surrounding the Black Stars, Queiroz fully embraces the responsibility.
"Since my arrival, I've felt the immense passion that drives this team. That means the dreams and expectations are just as high." Then, as a rallying cry: "I'm ready; are you? Let's take on this challenge together."
Queiroz accepts with honor and privilege
Beyond the sporting challenge, the 73-year-old emphasized the personal significance of this appointment.
"Being part of this sporting family is an honor and a privilege for me," he said after his meeting with the Minister of Sports, Kofi Adams.
The coach claims a deep connection with the continent.
"I have very strong African roots. I was born and raised in Africa, in Mozambique."
A connection that gives special meaning to his mission.
"Leading this African country to the World Cup will remain an unforgettable memory in my life."
A high-stakes mission
As Otto Addo's successor, Queiroz inherits a team searching for renewal after recent disappointing performances. His priority is clear: stabilize the squad and prepare it for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Ghana, drawn in a tough group alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, will need to hit top form quickly. Aware of the challenges, the manager is counting on his experience.
"Expectations are high, but that's exactly what makes this project unique."
Before the tournament, the Black Stars will face Wales and Mexico in friendly matches. A crucial first step for the new boss of the Ghanaian bench.
